A free alternative to Adobe Acrobat for simple edits

Acrobat is the reference implementation for the PDF format and the strongest choice for forms, standards and certified signatures. PdfCanvas covers the common edits, without a subscription and without an upload.

Where Acrobat is the better choice

  • You need AcroForm filling, JavaScript actions, PDF/A or accessibility remediation.
  • You need certified digital signatures or redaction that removes content from the file.
  • You work with scanned documents and need OCR or document comparison.
  • You need vendor support and a compliance statement.

Where PdfCanvas is enough

Most day-to-day edits are small: correct a name, cover an old address, add a signature, rotate a scan, remove a blank page, highlight a clause. That is exactly the set PdfCanvas handles, and it handles it in the tab.

Text from the original document stays editable. You click the line, change it, and the export keeps the page as vector content instead of replacing it with an image.

Be precise about redaction

The whiteout tool covers content visually. It does not remove the underlying text from the PDF, so it is not a redaction tool. If a document must be legally sanitized, use Acrobat or another tool that rewrites the content stream, and verify the result.

Frequently asked questions

+Can PdfCanvas replace Acrobat?

For simple text, image, signature and page edits, yes. For forms, OCR, redaction and certified signatures, no.

+Does the free editor add a watermark?

No. Exported files are clean and there is no paid tier.

+Can I open a document signed with a certificate?

You can open and edit it, but PdfCanvas does not validate or create certified signatures. Editing may invalidate an existing signature, as with any editor.

+Is the output a real PDF?

Yes. Original pages stay vector, and overlays are written as PDF text, shapes and images, not as a screenshot of the page.
