A local alternative to iLovePDF
iLovePDF is a mature suite with dozens of tools and a polished mobile experience. The difference is architectural: it processes files on its servers, while PdfCanvas edits them in your browser.
Where iLovePDF is the better choice
- You need merging, compression, OCR, conversion to and from Office formats, or batch operations.
- You want a mobile app with a familiar interface and no setup.
- You need to process many files quickly and do not mind uploading them.

What PdfCanvas does differently
There is no upload endpoint. The PDF is rendered and edited in the tab, and export uses pdf-lib to write a new vector file. That makes the tool usable on a confidential document without adding a third party to the data flow.
It also edits existing text, not only overlays: with the PDFium engine you can click a line from the original document and change it, then re-export without flattening the page into an image.
What you give up
PdfCanvas has no merge, compress, OCR or Office conversion. It does not fill AcroForm fields. If your task starts with "merge these files", iLovePDF is the faster answer and PdfCanvas is not a replacement.
Frequently asked questions
+Is PdfCanvas free like iLovePDF?
Both have a free tier. PdfCanvas has no paid tier, no daily task counter and no watermark; the whole editor is MIT licensed.
+Does iLovePDF keep my files?
Their retention rules are in their privacy policy and may change. The point of a local editor is that the question does not arise, because there is no upload.
+Can I edit text with both?
iLovePDF focuses on page operations and conversions. PdfCanvas edits text lines from the original PDF, plus overlays, shapes, images and signatures.
+Which is faster for one small edit?
PdfCanvas, because there is no upload and no queue. On a fast connection the difference is a few seconds; on a large file it grows.
